Father, Son and Holy Spirit

The Word of God teaches that there are three persons in the Godhead: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Yet, there is but ONE GOD! Let's look at some scriptures in the Bible that demonstrate this great truth.

The Bible teaches that at Creation, three Divine Beings were present and active. Moses records by the Holy Spirit, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the water" (Genesis 1:1-2). Here we have recorded in the Word of God that "God created the heaven and the earth". We notice that God the Holy Spirit was present at creation. Also, we find in John 1:1-3 that God the Son was present at creation, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made". Now notice in Genesis 1:26 that there is more than one Divine Being present and active at creation: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness".

At the baptism of Jesus Christ, we see that there are three Divine Beings mentioned. The Bible says, "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:16-17). Notice that Jesus, God the Son, is being baptized; "the Spirit of God", God the Holy Spirit, was "descending like a dove"; and God the Father is the "voice from heaven".

Jesus Christ taught, while on the earth, that there are three Divine Beings in the Godhead. Jesus says in John 14:16-17, "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you". Here we see Jesus, God the Son speaking of God the Father and God the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus calls "Comforter" and "the Spirit of truth".

Jesus, before His ascension into heaven, gave what is called the "Great Commission" unto His apostles saying, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost". Notice that Jesus said, "in the name of" (singular) and then named three (plural) Divine Beings, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

These are a few of the passages of Scripture that teach there are three Divine Beings that make up the Godhead, yet there is but ONE God. More next week.
