The Way, The Truth And The Life

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6). What did Jesus mean by that statement?

First Jesus said, "I am...". Jesus Christ is the I AM, that is, God Almighty. "I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am, ye shall die in your sins" (John 8:24).  Jesus again said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am" (John 8:58). This expression of I AM shows us that Jesus Christ existed before Abraham, and we learn that the I AM was the God who spoke to Moses in the burning bush (Exodus 3:14).

Second, Jesus said "I am the way...". The prophet of old said, "O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps" (Jeremiah 10:23). The Wise man said, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12). If you and I want to be with the Father one day, we must forget about want we want and want we think is the right way, and follow Jesus. Jesus is the one and only way to the Father.

Third, Jesus said "I am...the truth". Is there really a right and a wrong way to serve the Lord?  Many today say, "It doesn't matter what we do as long as we are sincere. Besides, we're all going to the same place anyway." Jesus said He was “the truth”. That means that neither you nor I are the ones that determine what truth is or is not. Jesus said, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). If Jesus is “the truth”, and He is, then we must worship God the way Jesus said to.

Fourth, Jesus said "I am...the life". Sin is what brought about death. When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit they died (were separated from God). Jesus is life. "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him" (John 3:36). If you and I want to live eternally, we must come to Jesus.

Finally, Jesus said "no man cometh unto the Father, but by me".  It doesn't matter who you are or what you have or don't have, each one of us, if we are to spend eternity with the Father, must obey Jesus. Jesus said "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 7:21).

Jesus is coming back one day to judge the world. "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad" (II Corinthians 5:10). Will you be ready?
